Hard water in Malta and your diffuser

This is the question we expect more than any other, once there are enough of our diffusers in enough Maltese homes: it worked beautifully for a month and now the mist is weak.

The machine is almost certainly fine. It is limescale, and it takes five minutes to remove.

Why Malta is a special case

Maltese tap water is a blend of desalinated seawater and groundwater drawn from the limestone aquifer. Both ends of that blend carry a great deal of dissolved mineral, and the limestone in particular loads the water with calcium and magnesium. The result is water that is hard by any European standard. It is the same water that furs up your kettle, leaves white spots on the shower screen, and shortens the life of a washing machine.

An ultrasonic diffuser notices it before the kettle does, because of how it works. There is no heat and no flame. At the bottom of the tank sits a small ceramic disc that vibrates a few million times a second, and that vibration is what turns water into cold mist. The disc is about the size of a five cent piece. A film of scale on it that you can barely see is enough to damp the vibration and halve the output.

Weak mist is almost never a broken diffuser. It is a dirty disc.

The five minute fix

What you need

• White vinegar. The cheapest bottle in any Maltese supermarket is the right one.
• A cotton bud.
• A soft cloth.

The steps

1. Unplug it. Always unplug it first.
2. Pour out whatever water is left, tipping away from the mist outlet rather than towards it.
3. Half fill the tank with water and add about a tablespoon of white vinegar.
4. Leave it to stand for ten minutes. You do not need to run it.
5. Dip the cotton bud in the vinegar water and wipe the ceramic disc gently, in small circles. This is the whole job. If there is chalky white on it, it will come away.
6. Empty it, rinse twice with clean water, and dry the inside with the cloth.

What not to do

• Do not scrape the disc with anything hard. No fingernails, no knives, no scouring pads. That ceramic surface is what makes the mist. Scratch it and you have a permanently weaker diffuser.
• Do not put it in a dishwasher, and do not submerge the base. The electronics sit underneath the tank.
• Do not use bleach or a general kitchen spray. Vinegar is a mild acid and it is the right tool for this. Bleach is not, and the residue ends up in your air.

How often

Once a week, if you use it most days. It sounds like a chore until you do it once and realise it takes less time than making coffee. If you would rather not think about it at all, do it every Sunday and forget about it the rest of the week.

There is a second habit that matters just as much: empty the tank when you have finished with it. Water left standing for three days evaporates a little and concentrates the mineral that stays behind, and it does that directly on top of the disc. Thirty seconds of emptying at night saves the five minutes on Sunday.

Should you use bottled or filtered water

You can, and it will slow the scaling noticeably. A jug filter is enough. You do not need bottled. But we would far rather tell you that tap water is completely fine as long as you clean the disc than have you carrying six packs of still water home in August because a website told you to.

One thing to avoid is distilled or fully de-ionised water. Some ultrasonic units mist it poorly, because there is nothing in it for the vibration to work against. Ordinary tap water, or jug filtered water, is the sweet spot.

If it still will not mist

Work through this in order.

• Is the water above the minimum and below the marked fill line? Overfilling is the second most common cause of no mist at all.
• Is the cover seated properly? Most units will run but not mist if the top is a fraction out of place.
• Is the disc genuinely clean, checked in daylight rather than at eleven at night?
• Did oil go onto a dry disc? Oil belongs in water, never straight onto the ceramic.
